There are age restrictions (Federal) for the purchase of ammunition. One must be at least 21 years old to buy handgun ammunition, and one must be at least 18 to buy rifle and shotgun ammunition.

This always came up when buying .22 for a plinker back when I was a teen. They'd ask if it was for a rifle or handgun...rifle was always the correct answer, lol.

I go to the store and say "I want this".

They take my ID and run a background check. In the mean time, I am filling out a couple of forms, mostly with my personal information and attestation that I have not committed crimes, is deemed mentally incompetent, and etc, along those lines.

After the background check comes back, the clerk checks my answers on the form and if everything is okay, I head to the cashier, and pay for the gun. A few minutes later I am out in the car with a new gun.

The clerk would expect you to inspect the firearm but it's not a requirement.

The above is 100% correct, OP. In a nutshell..., you need to be 18 to purchase a rifle/shotgun and 21 for a pistol, have 2 forms of ID, clean background check, cash/credit card, and then off you go. Once I had to wait about an hour for the background check to clear (busy holiday weekend), but it's usually completed in the ten minutes that it takes for the dealer to prep the firearm. If something questionable (but not disqualifying) comes up on your background check, a VA state trooper will stop in to the store if they are local and available to verify, and then approve/deny in person.

I'd recommend you take a concealed carry class even if you never plan to apply for the permit. It will cover everything you need to know to safely handle, maintain, and store your pistol. Better classes are offered south of Northern VA (Stafford, Fredericksburg, Richmond, etc.).

Many of the big-box stores (Walmart) and places like Dicks Sporting goods not only ask for your DL at checkout, they actually run it through the cash register, recording the info. Not sure if every store does it; I couldn't find a legal requirement for registering the info, but it's what they do now.

Thank you! This was very helpful.

Are there frequent gun shows? Seems like you'd have to wait until one comes to town.

Stop responding to this idiot, no one this dumb should own a fire arm.

It's a troll, true )))

Google "gun shop VA" and call the gun shop, troll. They will tell you all about the procedure of purchasing a gun.
But I suggest you to opt out of gun purchase, if you had to come on forum for info, you will shoot yourself in the foot, or, god forbid, shoot innocent bystander.
Get yourself a kiddie water gun, green or red - clearly a toy, not a real gun replica - to avoid been shut by police. With your level of intelligence it may very well happen.

Anonymous wrote:Statistics from the Violence Policy Center show a gun in the home is 7,428 X more likely to kill you or a family member than be used to stop a criminal.

What that means, for those who can't math, is that for each criminal stopped by a home owner, 7,428 innocent people are killed.

The Southern Povery Law Center conducted a survey and found that 96.6% of all admitted gun owners are either slightly or very racist.

Is that the company you want to keep?

You literally spread "fake news."

VPC refuses to recognize any "defensive gun uses" (DGUs) - even those cited in studies conducted by the Department of Justice:

Further, your ranting has nothing to do with OP's question.
