We lose it when we take it to work etc.
We don't take it out of our house. There's silverware at each of our jobs.

DP, no. I don't even let my kids to eat in my car. Ever. And we do a long car trips.

Silverware...I pretty much never lose it, since I don't take it out of the house. So I still have the same set we got when we moved in to our first condo, and it works great. We also have a sterling set that we basically use for holidays.

In 10 years I have never needed a knife sharpened. With heavy use. I do hone the edge but...
Why would you need that much sharpening?

Maybe every 20 years for the set. For things like small dessert spoons, etc., whenever we need more. We don't replace.

Never? We've lost two tea spoons due to my husband taking them to work and somehow never making it back home with them. But 10 teaspoons is plenty anyway. And I have plastic spoons for him now. It's been almost 11 years since we got it as a weddng gift.

We had place settings for 24. Now we have 8 forks + a random number of the other utensils. Most of it disappeared without our noticing. We never pack them for outside the home. The hypothesis is distraction or play dates. I'm very impressed by the families that kept their sets intact.

Yes it all matches. I got Oneida for my wedding and haven't replaced it since. it's all in perfect condition and there are 12 of everything. If I lose any I would replace.

Ours is 14 years old and still chugging along. No plans to replace it ever. We did add a set of cutco table knives, which are sharpened about every two years; they replaced one or two at some point.
I don't lose silverware! We have a set of cheap but still metal kids' silverware from ikea that the kids take to school or use if I pack them a yogurt to eat before practice. But all of that stuff seems to make it home too! Maybe you need some plastic flatware?
FWIW, my parents are still using the flatware the received for their wedding in 1969. It still looks great! I know that mom added an extra 10-12 spoons at some point and she also has cutco table knives.

No. Not sure how one would go about losing cutlery. To the PP who takes it to work: I do keep a set in my work desk, but that stays at work, along with a bowl I use for soups. And to PP who eats her lunch in her car - why? That sounds kind of sad... And no, I don't get tired of looking at the same cutlery for 45 years. Not sure I look at it all that much - too busy eating. It is a fairly simple design, so it's not particularly noticeable.

We bought a new set about 12 years ago. At the time our flatware was a mishmash of the set I bought when I started college (3-4 place settings), the set DH had from college (another 3-4 place settings), some extra hand-me-downs, and few random pieces.
The new set is still going strong and I see no reason to replace it any time soon. I have replaced a couple of individual serving pieces that got lost at potlucks.
Other than serving pieces, though, I don't take it out of the house. I use plasticware if I need to eat on the go (car or picnics) and office supplies if I'm eating at work.

If what you mean is flatware, OP, I don't think I'll ever want to replace mine. I still like it better than anything else I've seen. It has a nice weight in my hand and is a simple and elegant pattern.
At one point I was down to only 6 or so teaspoons. I lucked out and found somebody selling 8 place settings on Craigslist for something like $100 a few years ago.
And food that requires flatware is not eaten in the car. Wtf?
