Because it's still hilarious. Different people find different things funny. 99% of sitcoms currently on TV make me want to claw my eyes out, yet there they are, still on TV.

It is an incubator for comedians. Good skits, bad skits; doesn't matter. It is both a testing ground and a proving ground for comedy. I'd say it is essential to the industry.

SNL does political satire well but I think the rest of the show has lots its mojo. I particularly dislike the monologues which have now almost exclusively become silly song numbers performed by hosts with no musical talent whatsoever.
