This could be ADHD, hope your kids don't have it, but it is hereditary.
Otherwise teach them to plan and have a basic sense of organization. Military could help too...

And, yes, I married a Peter Pan because I'm a female version. Neither of us never wanted to grow up and move to the suburbs. We stayed in the city, with one car, and one kid and had an au pair who helped us know what to do with her when she was little.
