True! I learned that mine fits better in a wider toe box when I got him measured at a shoe store.

I also like the Carters "Every Step" shoes for early walkers. They have lasted for both of my girls.

Yes, I love these too! They are half the price and hold up well. Surprise is the brand name.

Closing stores does not equal closing business. Stride Rite shoes will still be available online and in other retailers.

Yes. Just do it.

I think this depends on how your kid's feet grow. I get mine measured (and buy in store) twice a year usually, then buy online in between. Her feet grow steadily and don't jump sizes though.

Anonymous wrote:Definitely get some, they are well made and perfect for little feet, but maybe not for first shoes.

For first shoes, try Robeez or Bobux or other soft shoes.

DS has been walking for a month, and we have a pair of Freshly Picked Mocassins for everyday / daycare wear and a pair of Stride Rite sandals for "dressing up."

Shoes are worth spending $$ on, because they can really affect development.

On the other hand, most of DS's wardrobe is hand me downs.

FWIW, I got the Stride Rites on sale for about $20.

Agreed.

I'd buy soft sole shoes for a new walker.

I have a pair of fabric sneakers for my one year old, and while the soles are in great shape, the tops look SO worn after a month. Maybe it's inevitable because he's still climbing stairs on hands and knees and tripping occasionally, so is scraping the tops of them a lot?

YES!!! I was so pissed because I bought these super cute $$$$ SKR shoes and the top layer totally flaked off after a couple wears. They look so beat up! Never again!

Ok, thank you!! I thought I was crazy! They are SO cute, but not if they wear out after a few weeks!

OP here, this is really helpful info thanks everyone. I'm planning to go get DS sized this weekend. I'm okay with spending the money on nicer shoes but just wanted to be sure it's worth it before I bit the bullet.

One other thing - will a shoe with a stiffer bottom (Stride Rite over a Robeez) encourage DS to stand flat on his feet more? Right now he's liking his toes better than standing flat. I'm not overly concerned about it right now, but we're doing what we can to encourage him to keep his heels down.

Which site? I look for specific ones at Amazon DSW or 6pm, but I don't find the ones DD chooses from the SR website. Aren't you limited in selection of styles if you don't buy from SR.com?

NP here. Those are the sites I check (also Nordstrom Rack), but no, they don't have the same selection as the SR website. If your DD is picking a specific pair, you may have to buy them from SR itself.
