Harris Teeter and Wegmans have great cakes. I've also had good luck with cakes from BJ's. The Giant cakes are moist, but I find the frosting too sweet.

We like the Carvel ice cream cakes - usually no leftovers and both Giant and Safeway carry them.

Stay away from Balduccis' cakes -- unless you like them super dry. They look good, but that's about it.

Hm. I have been to one party in my child's life where the cake was bought. All others were homemade. I grew up with mum making my cake. I didn't realize buying bday cakes was so common...

If I were to buy one, I think I'd pick one of those yellow cakes with glazed fruit piled on high, and a thin layer of vanilla cream in the middle. Ohboyoboy!

Safeway with the whipped icing is the best. So yummy.

You could also do ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins or Carvel - always a hit with kids and adults.

A lot depends on what you're used to. If you grew up on store cakes or mix cakes with canned icing, a scratch cake or fancyass bakery cake using butter is not going to ring your chimes, and vice versa.

If it's for a kids' party, it's probably safe to assume that most of the guests are only going to eat the icing, which they would like as vividly colored as possible. Do what's easiest.


Please. Whole Foods can't even do baquettes well any more. We prefer bakery cakes and safeway has TWO levels of cake ... Many children and grownups don't eat the piles of icing.

Another vote for Safeway! It's my least favorite of the 3 for regular groceries so I was very surprised that their cakes were so good. Now all of my cakes come from Safeway.

Safeway cakes are good! I've ordered them the past two years for my daughter's birthday and will order one again this year. And I am not a all impressed with Cake Love. In fact, I think Starbucks cupcakes are much better!

Safeway!!! Reformed cake snob here.

Get the cupcakes that they decorate into a sheet cake for kids. they love it, and no cutting of cakes and whining of "hers is bigger than mine". You can get half vanilla, half chocolate cupcakes. DS is turning 5 on Monday, and I"m taking one of those to his KG class--again, same as last year. Last year's was sucked down in about 30 seconds by kids and teachers alike.

I think Safeway is the best of the three. Costco is also great. For the price you really can't beat them. I adore WF in general but their cakes, especially something like a birthday cake, suck and aren't worth the $. Heidelburg Bakery is OK but I think Amphora Bakery is very good. Really, though, especially for kids, you can't get a better value than a Safeway or Costco cake and they are tasty.
