I think everybody missed the obvious point of OP's post. It has nothing to do with Please and Thank-you.
Why is her husband bossing her around. That is the problem. Her H should not be her task master, even if he did throw in a please or thank-you.

I'd like to think it's my Midwestern roots.
I'm French and i do the same. (Although I do recognize midwesterners seem way nicer than us
). I would consider it very impolite and a very bad role model for our children if we were not both doing it.
Now tone is also key, someone can give an order with a please or actually ask something very nicely without a please
