I think it depends on what you're talking about. Yes, Ohio State is a great research institution and highly regarded for graduate schools.
Miami is fundamentally an undergraduate institution (yes, it has graduate programs, but it's known for being an undergraduate school). It's also the most selective public university in Ohio (or at least it was when I attended).
And, yes, JMU is far more comparable to Kent, Bowling Green or OU. GMU would be comparable to Columbus State.

I went to Ohio State in the late 90s. When I attended, Miami was definitely thought of as a better school.

Miami certainly worked for her. My BIL went there in the late 60s. He was a hippie so he didn't care much for the school but has done great in his career, so doesn't knock the school.
Yes, Paul Ryan did go there but don't blame that on Ohio. He must have not gotten into U Wisconsin, his in-state school.

We're from Ohio. My brother went there, with merit aid, in the marching band, majored in statistics, and got a great job out of college at Deloitte in Chicago. He graduated at the height of the recession in 2008, and still got an awesome job.
It was a great experience for him academically and socially.
