The whole family knows they are cheap. Everyone gives gifts back and forth. People notice when your paycheck is in the seven figures before any bonuses but you write the smallest checks at graduations. We are talking token gifts - 50 bucks from everyone, 25 from them, etc. It wouldn't even be a thing, if he wife didn't also post hateful, negative Liberal partisan bullshit constantly on FB and include crap about how much better you/your affiliation are/is. They are huge name droppers and love to give themselves credit but actions are never there. Donations? Haha. How about I was busy and stressed out as a new mom but had time to start a small donation/charity thing and they didn't donate a penny? Sometimes you just get a gut feeling.

I'll happily admit to being judgmental about hypocrisy. Not changing either. These "Liberal" armchair activists (and they are everywhere these days) irritate the living daylights out of me.

On the other had, I have friends who work in non profits and out in the field helping people - one girl I know works with illegal immigrant children. While I am against illegal immigration, I have complete respect and good will for her. I also never see her posting anything negative or hateful. She lives her principles.

The rest of you just like to virtue signal and high horse.


As opposed to being outright uncharitable., no pretense about it. Got it.

Those stats are pretty skewed--most people with lower incomes don't itemize, so the only people in the lower brackets that they have charitable deduction information for are the people who have lots of deductions. If you look across all Americans with incomes <$25,000 or <$50,000, those percentages would be a lot lower. 5% of gross is higher than most of this chart, which is based on adjusted gross income and only for those reporting deductions.

Seriously. How did you fit this kind of detective work into your hectic charity-starting-new-mom schedule? Have you thought about ways you could use your time and energy more productively?

We also have very wealthy relatives who give incredibly cheap gifts and disdain charitable giving. Interestingly, they are very conservative Republicans, and yet I have somehow managed not tar all Republicans with the same brush. Give it a try sometime. You may like more nuanced thinking once you get used to it.

FWIW, tax returns don't always tell the whole story. For example, we donated a six-figure sum to a charitable trust all in one year and then made gifts from that trust in subsequent years that did not appear on tax returns (because the deduction was already given when we put the money into the trust). So anyone who would have looked at our tax returns during the next few years might have thought us to be quite uncharitable, when in fact we were making multiple five-figure gifts each year. The %age evened out to 5% or 6% of income each year, but using the trust allowed us to take the deduction in a high income year and maximize the benefit. Point being, things are not always what they seem.

I do bookkeeping for various individuals around town and the ones with the most money are the cheapest when it comes to charitable giving. They also overvalue what their "volunteer" value is by a hundredfold.
