I'm allergic to standard deodorants, so I've used my fair share of natural ones.

Heres what DID NOT work: crystal, crystal roll on, Tom's of Maine, Trader Joe's, Every Man Jack

Worked well: Primal Pit Paste - strong (husband used this too), stopped using it because I'm not a huge fan of the paste application and the stick didn't work as well for me. It also gave me a rash/chemical burn occasionally.

My new great love in life: Native deodorant (only available from their website I think). Works really, really well for both hubs and I. Occasional under arm irritation but not as bad as pit paste-- they have a new sensitive formula I've not yet tried.

Also, I've heard good things about Schmidt's but I have not tried it personally-- looks pretty similar to Primal Pit Paste from what I can tell.

Totally laughing--I took my almost 12-year old to CVS with me last night and let him smell and choose his deodorant. He chose Old Spice! They have like 6 different smells now with cool labeling.

I figure more chance of him wearing it when he feels he has a choice.

Toms definitely wasn't cutting it.

I have had good luck with Crystal Essence. Like Tom's, it has alum (potassium alum) so it is not aluminum free. However, this seems to be key to its success for us.

Tom's irritated all of our skins. The Crystal Essence has been great. We all use it now.

They have to wash their underarms REALLY well at night. I have my boy use bar soap--Dove Go Fresh. Then he applies the deodorant before bed and again when he wakes up.

SO far, so good. And trust me, on the days he doesn't wear it--I know. I know right away. He smells awful.

schmidt's deodorant

Crystal Rock deodorant. Has been working fine for DS for a few years. It doesn't work for everyone.

You also may be used to their scents and don't notice it when they smell. I had the same conversation with my sister recently. Her oldest boy reeks after he gets back from practice, and she says she just doesn't notice it. I told her you've got to get him a better deodorant I can sell them coming down the hall. And she was completely oblivious.

Dove Men's Care Deodorant and now anti-perspirant was good for my son who did not like the overpowering scents of Old Spice and Axe. Tom's and other natural things did not work.

They need something heavy duty at this age. Natural stuff doesn't cut it. Get the super high test deodorant until your son gets through puberty. IMO it's the only thing that works.

Sixth grade teacher here. I just sent a note home to all the kids (not just those that stank, because I did not want to single anyone out). The note reminded parents of proper hygiene. Basically, I said I do not want my classroom smelling like a locker room. If your kid smells after school, consider changing something; more frequent showers, different/and deodorant.

Please do this. Natural does not work. tween BO is not a good smell.

I tried and gave up on natural stuff many times. It does not work

It does not work when they start puberty. Maybe somewhat in winter--but not with sports and not with heat.
