However ultimately it is HIS friend & therefore HIS decision to make.

A lot of LE voted for Trump. My husband is LE and he voted for Trump. He's also a Domestic Violence Officer. His job is to protect women. How he chose to vote has no bearings on how he does his job. Tough call. I'm a Dem and absolutely hate Trump. I have a number of friends who voted for Trump - and some of those surprised me.
I've managed to stay good friends with the majority of them, because we just don't talk about it. But I had to unfriend a few people because their postings (and friends' postings on their walls) made it clear that our beliefs and morals were more different than I'd realized, and I lost respect for them. And for a few of them, I unfollowed them and re-followed them when the postings were mostly over.
Your husband may just need more time to accept that he and his friend have certain differences. Maybe they can make plans in a few months?

+1. The Dems I know say it's about disliking Trump, but peel back the onion and there's a nasty under layer of anti middle America, anti State U, anti domestic beer, and anti pick up trucks.

To others, think of this from the cop's perspective. He is, by the poster's admission, a decent and good guy, and thus it can be extrapolated that he chose a helping profession for altruistic reasons, and possibly even risks his life daily for the sake of his community. Now, harken back (I was a lit undergrad, LOL) to the days of the Democratic convention. On the first night, Hillary trotted out the "Mothers of the Whatever" - black women who had lost their sons to police action, even though these sons were, for the most part, in open defiance of police orders. To me, it was a blatant ploy to win over black voters by siding with them over the police. It was not until the fourth night, when apparently Hillary's advisors really to what extent she was dissing cops, that they honored the wife of a fallen police officer. If I were a cop, I wouldn't have voted for her, either.
At my H office the educated (those with degrees, law degrees and graduate degrees) LEO voted for Hilary or did not vote. They did not vote for a rich guy that admits to sexually assaulting women and got away with it. They have enough of watching rich white guys get off because they can afford the good lawyers.. The ones that have 2 years of community college love Trump.
Trump is making their job harder not easier. From a cops perspective, creating civil unrest does not make for a better community. Many are in the reserves and the idea of Trump being in charge of their welfare is scary.
A good cop knows there is a huge balance between the rights of the citizens and the rights of the cops. The ignorant ones just want more leeway in violating people's civil rights.
Believe me... you don't know if he is a good cop from watching his life... children/church... they can get very dark once the uniform goes on.
But the OP said this WAS a good cop. If she and her husband think so and are banishing him from his life simply because of his vote, then THEY are the ones who are the bigots. And to your statement that educated people did not vote for Trump (where have I heard THIS before??), I know plenty of highly educated people who did, including doctors. Finally, your argument that Trump is creating civil unrest is unreal when you consider how Obama jumped on any race-related incident, quickly taking the black person's side and instigating more racial strife.
