well, where in the country? in a month means late october, weather can be iffy.

First, if you have a date, send a save the date to your invitees.

DC war memorial is a gorgeous place to get married, you can also do some of the other parks in DC, VA, and MD. you 'll need a permit.

then, scout restaurants. I went to a great wedding that was an outdoor ceremony followed by drinks and dinner at a restaurant in adams morgan, they just rented it out for the evening. It wasn't even an 'event' type restaurant.

finally, there are lots of cool, small places that wont break the bank if you dont want a restaurant. We had an event at the DC International Students House in Dupont; they have a caterer, we brought wine.

I'd first figure out exactly how many people "closest family and friends" adds up to an let the out of towners know the date so they can make it. Then find a room to rent at a restaurant for the reception, schedule the pop-up with a minister, and look for clothes/rings after.

Have fun!

Wait. How is having a cookout free? Didn't you have to pay for the food, drinks, plates, silverware etc?

PP here. Looks like the military bases are still all inclusive and still insanely affordable.. (I forgot to mention above that the wedding cake and DJ are also included...)

We did ours at a military base (even though neither of us are military). We loved the fact that it was a low cost all inclusive package at a gorgeous place. The per-head price includes everything - full bar, plated dinner, she, flowers, dance floor - literally the entire reception. We just signed one contract. That was ten years ago, so not sure if it changed. Check out Fort Belvoir, Fort McNair, and Fort Myers.
