My mom, my friends, my old hair stylist (who is no longer my hair stylist). Started when I turned forty.

Truly, this is fascinating to me. Who are these friends? What do they say to you?

My friends never say anything but positive things about how I look. That doesn't mean they complement me all the time--they don't. But if anyone does say anything, it is always positive. Do other people have "friends" who criticize their looks? Why are you friends with these people?

Can't help you with the mother problem.

A medium Bob is not that short. I think most are thinking about the old lady spikey hair. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but it does not look good on everybody and there is a large amount of pressure to cut off all your hair when you reach 40+. At least for me.

Remember that SNL skit about mom hair!

I think both long and short can look good, but I really don't get the thought behind getting the spiky look. Maybe I am missing something - what is the advantage of getting a really short & spikey cut vs. one that is just very short?

I'm 51, blue eyes and light skin and have straight hair, and used to have brown hair. For the last two years, I've been letting it go natural (salt and pepper).

I find I look younger with my natural-colored hair, because it's kinder against my face than dyed hair, which always oxidizes and has a little brass in it. And there's nothing like seeing long 20-something brown hair and when the woman turns around, her face is 50--that look looks unhealthy. I'd rather look older and healthy than younger and ill.

I do think that for me, at least, longer is better. The white (actually colorless) hair has length to shine in streaks.

Here's another ignoramus.

+1
Cut it. Nobody wants to look like Vera Wang.

I think this is why curly's can keep it long as they age. The visual impression much more full, even if it would be thin if they ironed it flat.

Not necessarily. Sometimes thinning curly hair reveals more scalp than hair that lies flat. This has been the experience of a friend of mine, which is why in her 50s she started wearing her hair blown straight when she never had before.

I think this is more common than people realize, and it's just another reason why comments about older women "giving up" or "letting themselves go" are not just unkind but ignorant.

Well, of course that's not true.

But if you believe it, then I'm guessing you have very low self-esteem and tend to be a "people pleaser."

sucks for you, I guess

Anyone have any good examples of short hair?

Preferably the European who posted. I'm guessing from somewhere in Northern Europe, it seems to be much more common.

I like these:

I'm 50. And I'm the small side at 5'5 and 115 pounds. I do not look good in short hair. I wish I did, but I don't. Mine is in a long straight bob. It barely touches my shoulders.

I really hate that "let me talk to your manager" hair that is still popular among women in their 40s and 50s. No one looks good with that cut.
