My kids started watching R movies in middle school.
I use IMDB parental guide to determine why it is R. For example, Stand by Me is R because of an immense amount of cussing. That did not bother me.

The age at which I'd let my kid are a certain movie depends more on the reason for the movie's rating than the rating itself.

Yeah. What used to be R is now PG 13 for the most part. The more gruesome or more sexually explicit stuff is R.
I was 17 but I had very protective parents.

Hopefully you don't allow your son's friends to play M games or watch the movies without asking the parents first. It really infuriates me when other parents don't ask me, since i'm the one left dealing with the consequences. (nightmares and/or refusing to sleep alone in my kids case)
