We're at an EOTP school now that our kid really dislikes, but we aren't able to move out of DC for one more year. After that, we'd be happy to stay in the District or to move to the suburbs depending on the lottery. She has some special needs, and is on the immature side. She's a pretty average student and BASIS would not be a good fit.
This list seems random too. Montessori or Latin? Middle only versus HS track? Try to look more long term if you can. Time flies by.
We're willing to move for middle school, so going through 8th or 12th is a plus but not a requirement. We're balancing some competing things that we/our kid would like: convenient commute to either our house or jobs, path past 5th grade, no uniform, decent academics, outdoor space and time, racial diversity within the upper grades, small school/classes, special ed services, having friends there, and more. No one school has all of that. So it is a pretty unusual list, but one where each school has something better than our kid's current school and we are optimistic about getting in someplace.
Personally I would choose schools that had a HS track over ones that don't. Because Latin has such a small number of kids admitted each year for 5th (90) and almost half those go to siblings with preference usually, I would put that as my number one. That way if I didn't get it I would at least be waitlisted. Putting it so low will get you knocked out immediately if you don't get placed there initially. Just a thought.

You do realize that you will likely get in to Shepherd and ITS and CMI will fall off your list entirely?
Yes. Shepherd is my #1 choice. Thanks. I've been in this rodeo before![]()
Only added a few others on the off chance that not all IB kids get into Shepherd. Yes, I know that means that I would have a bad lottery number and still wouldn't get into either anyway. Basically I just threw those in there as they are the only other schools we want.
We are IB for Shepherd and are happy with our experience thus far in the lower grades. Also know happy families at Inspired and CMI. Good luck--all good choices!
Are there any OOB students in your child(ren)'s grade(s)? We are zoned for Whittier but are considering putting Shepherd on our preK3 list. Just not sure if it's at all worthwhile if not even all IB children are getting in.

Unless you have an older sibling at Brent, you might consider adding Tyler Traditional too. Maybe Capitol Hill Montessori too? And if you really need public preschool, the Appletree near RFK and Friendship Chamberlain. There aren't many sure things on Capitol Hill these days though.

I know that's not many options, but I feel reasonably confident we will get into at least one. We are also looking at one private (Catholic) school. Worst case scenario, we will just pay for daycare for one more year, since we're at a federal center and the cost goes way down for 3 year olds.
