Deal if you keep Maryland's problems in Maryland.

You lack the most basic understanding of the US Constitution. I can see why Chaffetz appeals to you.

They are trying to get Evan McMullin to run. He's from Chaffetz's district and is a moderate Republican with a lot of national support from open-minded Democrats.

Go, Evan! I'm a progressive Democrat and don't agree with him politically on many things, but he's reasonable, non-autocratic, and patriotic (unlike the Trump crew, eager to sell out our country to the highest internal and external bidders). It's not good for the country to have one of its 2 political parties run by a bunch of under-educated charlatans. Chaffetz is the worst of the worst.

In general, we don't want to be part of Maryland, either, but it's self-defeating for you to dismiss a population that pays the highest per-capita income tax in the entire country and that would give worldwide recognition to a state that's mostly known for its aquarium and, sadly, its polluted bay.

Think of how much MD has to gain: nearly 600k new residents (that's a lot!) plus everything else DC has to offer, on top of the enourmous economy of DC.

Would they though? Why? What is in it for MD politicians to deal with complaints from DC resident's and competition from DC pols to maintain their elected positions? Unless MD would be allowed to collect a commuter fee against VA residents that commute into DC, I don't see much financial benefit to MD. (DC hasn't been allowed to collect such fees against out of district comuters, but maybe MD would have the authority to try it.) Is that what you think would happen?

Indeed. DC needs to merge with MD.

Makes sense for DC to become a part of VA or MD. Right now DC bears unfair share of homeless and mental health costs from these two and other states. DC inside a state would give DC more options to deal with these and other similar chronic problems.

As a part of retrocession into MD or VA annexation, DC should negotiate that it would keep the vast majority of funds its taxpayers generate, among other concessions.

How about DC + Northern VA become a state?

I like this idea. I would rather DC become part of VA rather than MD because liberal northern Virginia would welcome the extra voters to keep VA purple-- maybe even turn VA blue.

MD is solid blue and will be for the foreseeable future. Demo leaders in Annapolis and Baltimore don't want DC taking over their roles in Annapolis.

But Alexandria and Arlington would welcome DC's votes to bolster their own in Richmond.

Good argument

If Dysfunctional City and Pervasive Graft County merged to become a state, what would the new name be?

What's his motive? Would moving DC into Maryland reduce the number of electoral college votes that typically go to democrats?
