It's our thing and we save and make cuts in other ways so we can splurge on travel.
5k is splurging?
the average affluent American (those with over $1 million in investible assets) spends a total of $13,249 a year on leisure travel.

-$10K on an international trip for spring break.
-$2K on odds and ends like a few weekends of local skiing.
HHI $390K; 3 school aged kids.
Close to 40K per year on vacations with HHI of ~400K? How retirement and college savings look? Seems like a lot.
I don't see why it's a lot since they are left with a very nice income after they spend on vacations.
It's a lot but they can afford it
Right. That's what I meant.
Hmmm. My HHI is closer to 600K. 40K a year goes to private school - I view it as a HUGE expense that I am anxiously looking forward to being done with. 400K a year in DMV is an UMC income - spending 10% on vacation seems like a lot to me.

We are at a high income level so we spend more. Not sure it is necessarily instructive though. Winter break ski trip was about $10k for 4 people. Going on another western ski trip in March that will be much less because airfare is free, maybe $4k. We spend much of the summer at the beach, although it's not all vacation. There isn't a rental cost but the cost of owning a house is pretty high. We drive there. Food is not much different than food here so I don't count that as a cost. We are planning a week in Europe in the fall to visit a friend. Airfare will probably be free, so maybe $5k on that trip? Plus various weekends (parents weekend at college, which requires a flight and hotel), a couple of ski weekends, DH is coming with me to FL for a work trip in March, etc. I travel a lot for work so sometimes add a weekend trip if it's to someplace good.
I am glad you pointed this out.....the OP could have done a search and was too lazy to do so.

3 kids
$7K in travel
1 week beach vacation ~$2000 (go in June when it's still "off season"
1 10-day Christmas vacation to Florida each year ~$3000 (book hotels early like Springhill Suites, nothing too fancy)
1 "other" 7-day driving vacation somewhere around the US/Canada ~$2000
Where do you stay when you take your beach vacation? I'm just trying to figure out how to make a beach vacation work for our family, since we've never taken one before.
We stay in a hotel in Cape May, New Jersey. Cost is about $200 per night and has a kitchenette, so we generally eat breakfast in the room. Lunch is often sandwiches by the pool. Dinner is either a restaurant, pizza or barbeque. It's not fancy or luxurious, but it's relaxing and low-key. You could do something similar at many beaches - Ocean City, NJ or OCMD, VA Beach, Bethany, etc.
