But truly if you've never performed live with monitors, you really have no idea what you are talking about. If you can't hear yourself, it is impossible to sing along with the track. It's not like Karaoke. I had it happen to me playing piano at a church. The monitor stopped working and I couldn't hear anything. I might as well have been playing the air.
Plus, the timing is complete different. If her earpiece was out there is no way she would have been able to pull it off.
Everything you've written here is true. But for a performer of her caliber, this should be old hat. There's not a performer to who that hasn't happened. She should have stuck her finger in her ear to hear her notes and sang the hell out of it like her fans would expect, especially for a New Years show. She is so apathetic it sucks.
I don't think you quite comprehend the situation. You can hear the music b/c you're listening to your TV. When you're on stage in the middle of a huge crowd, you can't hear the music if your ear piece isn't working. She made the best of a bad situation.
I wish she'd stop wearing those ridiculously high heels though. Women--if you can't walk down stairs without help, then stop wearing stupid shoes.
Also, she must have been freezing in that silly outfit. Ryan Seacrest looked like a serial killer from a B movie in a tux and those gloves.
I comprehend it. I've had it happen. I stuck my finger in my ear found my key and saying the hell out of it. I didn't rely on my back up dancers to help me maneuver around the stage as I rolled my eyes and made lame non sequiturs. Technical difficulties is no excuse even if it were true, which I don't believe it is.
Sidenote: It's getting so tiresome trying to explain to my kids why it's important to not suck as a human being with behavior like this where people are rewarded for bad attitudes or apathy.
LOL, PP! When was the last time you performed for an estimated 2 million people?
Also, LOL on your "sidenote," you've obviously had a tough year if one bomb performance has shaken you up this much. You sound like an embittered back up singer. Hope this year is better and try not to suck as a human being.

I see lots of performers 'pull their ears out,' and they continue performing. So what was different about Mariah Carey's performance?
On GMA this morning the news anchors basically said this. That her ear piece wasn't working and she could not hear anything. Didn't know what pitch or which vocals she should be singing.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Exactly, PP.

It is completely different during an outdoor concert in a huge venue. This isn't your high school auditorium. The performers can't hear a thing without those ear pieces.
Her outfit was awful, but even at her worst she's a great singer. There is a high chance she was either lip syncing or using a backing vocal to boost her sound, because not even a superstar can sing outside in freezing temperatures. Clearly, she had lost her earpiece and it was causing her issues, and she either couldn't hear the backing music (likely) and/or the incorrect track was being played. She did not look stoned or drunk to me, but it must be like a bad dream to be onstage and unable to perform the way she'd like.
Her reaction was appropriate for the occasion: Sh*t happens.

My DH runs cable and utilities for one of the companies that did one the segments not in NYC.

Anonymous wrote:If you can't actually hear, it's a real problem. As another PP pointed out, there's a lag, so she's got to sing to the track, not what she hears over any PA. It's also really easy to get off key with the recording, and then you've got off vocals combined with the music track that the audience/viewers hear. Lionel Richie had a bit of that on ABC last night - heard his vocals off from the music track.
