Vet here. I strongly recommend a consult with Dr Chiapella at Veterinary Internal Medicine Practice of Northern Virginia in Manassas. She is an internal medicine guru. If not her, the other two Dr Deppe and Dr Torres are also both wonderful (at the same practice).

Quite possibly its diabetes, requiring twice daily insulin injections to manage. We decided with our very old dog that we weren't willing to go that far to prolong his life.

So sorry OP. If she is happy and has a good quality of life, keep her home and snuggly with you.

OP here
Well, sadly she is still losing weight. This time the vet said that she most likely has cancer. Nothing has ever showed up on any test, so I questioned that. The veterinarian said that there are many cancers that will not show up. I was thinking that she was going to continue losing weight at the same amount of time as she has been, but her veterinarian told me that she can begin to decline over days, or weeks. Apparently, the steroids stop working eventually when cancer is the culprit. I am completely shocked.
