We retire in five years. We already have our home. Ponte Vedra (Nocatee), Florida (not far from Jax and St. Augustine). We lived there for 6 years and loved everything about it.

Traffic sucks! Unless you have beach access, it's hard to actually go to the beach and park. The Cape is kinda gross for swimming and the beach is rough.

The Delaware beaches are just so gross and also full of ratchet people from Maryland. Gross.

Gross? They're some of the best, cleanest beaches in the US. Yes, they are public, but when you live there, you know when and where to go.

What? The beach in Lewes is on the Bay and it's calm! Traffic is bad on Route 1 in summer, but nothing like here most of the time.

Anonymous wrote:Just started thinking about this. Would prefer not to be surrounded by similarly situated old and aging. Prefer not Florida. Are there any great beach towns where homes are still relatively affordable and where my kids and grandkids would love to spend a lot of time?

My parents loved St James in coastal North Carolina. My kids loved visiting and going to the beach. I loved having bathroom/shower facilities and a pool at the beach. Plenty of affordable older homes on the market and more expensive new homes. Golf and tennis is excellent.

Easton is a real town and a very nice one too. St. Michaels is also great, but it is much smaller in terms of stores/restaurants/businesses. It's a pretty high-end area too, with lots of wealthy people. There are hospitals there too (Easton).

Lovely places but really shitty in winter.

My inlaws retired to lewes, DE. Can't beat the taxes. My parents winter in Naples and I've fallen in love with it!

The beach towns near Charleston, SC or Hilton Head, SC -- that entire coast.

This is silly. Spend any amount of time in NC and you will see the political scene is neither awful nor an influence on your daily life.

Spot on.

There are a lot of liberal and progressive people in North Carolina, but right-wing conservatives bankrolled a takeover of the state government. It's actually the type of place where people who care about politics ought to be reclaiming our democracy.

I never cease to be amazed by those who want to live in liberal areas, but only if all the work has already been done for them.

Course there's always hurricanes.

Sounds pretty awesome. Is it overrun by illegals?

Nope, the island is mostly upper middle class with one bridge on and off. Strict zoning keep illegals out. Is within the Corpus Christi city limits so all city services (police) are available. Golf carts can driven on city streets and the beach.

San Clemente is amazing, but the prices (if close to the ocean!).
