Grandma name

We are considering the name Alice for our daughter due next month too. It is a beautiful name! I had also worried people would confuse it w/ Alex. Alex is a very common nickname for both girls and boys, PP. I know or know of lots of kids w/ that name. Way more common than Alice. and they do sound quite similar depending on who's pronouncing them so it's a valid concern.

However, I think you will have some kind of issue like this with any name you pick. For instance, my name is an unusual name (family surname) that ends in -lly. People have called me every girl's name ending in -lly you can imagine...Kelly, Holly, Molly, Callie, etc. And, as PPs said, that happens even w/ common names like Michelle or Heather as well. Someone is going to mispronounce, misspell, or somehow mess up your kids' name. It's just the way it is.

My nephew's name is Henry, one of the most common boy names in this area. He was not more than 24 hours old when already 2 people had messed up his name--the lady who did his hearing screen at the hospital had written his name on a form and spelled it Henrey and a nurse talking to my aunt in the hallway asked the baby's name, was told it was Henry, and then asked if it was a boy or girl.

I'm OP. (And I'm not either of the PPs.) But FYI, PP, Alex as a nickname for a girl (for Alexandra or Alexandria or Alesandra or Alexis or probably other names) is SUPER common. Which is why I was thinking my little Alice (girl) might be mistaken for Alex (girl), because in my experience, Alex (for girls) is a more common name than Alice.

There are at least 6 girls named Alex just at my child's school. If you're trying to claim that Alex is not a common nickname for Alexandra, in the US at least, you clearly have no clue what you're talking about.

I think it's a great name! But it always makes me think of the song "Alice, Alice, who the [blank] is Alice?" That makes it even cooler, of course.

Love it. Know your audience though. DCUM is filled with yuppies who are caught up in the zeitgeist of old lady, plain Jane names.

If you come on here talking about you love Addison, you will get bombed while Alice gets all the praise. If you were posting on the Tulsa moms listserv, you would get very different responses.

My DH is Alex and this is why we did not choose Alice. Love the name and would have used it if DH had a different name.

No, but I teach a 16 year old Alice, and she's graceful and lovely as her name. There has never been a mixup with her name by other students or teachers at our small school.

Alice is a beautiful, classic name that is recognizable to everyone, but also a bit rare.
