The question is whether others would find him extraordinary. You can find a piece of waste in a toilet impressive, but if no one agrees, that may be a clue as to its intrinsic worth.

Go do your own work and be successful and you'll attractive a likeminded successful professional like yourself. Michelle Obama was and is a successful professional women just like her husband.

Yet the women who marry men like these are not independently successful or even necessarily "extraordinary."

Kate Middleton landed the most eligible bachelor of modern times. She was just a skinny rich white girl.

Nancy Reagan was a mediocre hollywood actress.

Michelle Obama was exceptionally successful compared to most women. Many people thought she'd end up being president at Harvard.

I think he's pretty freaking extraordinary! Especially reading about marriages on here. Just because someone is a 'Big Deal' doesn't mean they're an extraordinary partner.

Grieving and enduring many years of emotional hardship. I wouldn't wish that life on any person.

What puts, say, Kate Middleton, Michelle Obama, Nancy Regan and possibly Meghan Markle apart from a woman who marries an average middle class white collar man.

All these women - except Michelle - came from fairly wealthy families and had successful fathers (by traditional measures - wealth, power, expertise) as role models. Basically, they married their fathers. You're more likely to be exposed to "extraordinary" men if you already come from that background.

Which just makes the Michelle/Barack pairing even more incredible. Started from the bottom now they're here...

I have 2 girlfriends who married well.

Both would openly say their favorite thing about their husbands is their career. Both men work in prestigious fields, winning awards etc. Both wives are SAHM with no identity of their own besides being their husbands' wives. Their whole lives revolve around their husbands and they're proud of it.

These are type of women that men easily cheat on. They have no choice but to suck it up and stay in a broken marriage. They'll go to counseling for decades or pretend it's not happening all the while the husband is having fun with AP. You reap what you sow.

I don't think you actually marry and extraordinary man. It is like real estate. You buy a decent house with good bones in a neighborhood you want to live in. Next thing you know there is a starbucks and whole foods relocating to the area. The crack house gets closed down and the home values go up. Very few people know what neighborhood is going to be the next "It" place and the same goes for men. Just pick a decent one that you like and want around and maybe you will get lucky. Just stay away from the obvious cracked foundation=substance abuse, mold=wife beater. You get the point.

I find your apparent definition of what makes a man extraordinary less than it should be by a large margin.

Kate campaigned for that marriage - for probably a good decade or more. She decided it was what she wanted, so good for her. She gave up a lot of it. (Including carbs. Eff that.)

The money would be nice, but other than that, I'd take my own marriage every time... because it works for ME.

I think that many suburban, idolize "getting the right man" types, absolutely live for Kate Middleton. She's very safe, she has never done anything offensive, and she's "goals" because of her marriage situation. She's not who I would idolize, but I get it.

When it comes to marrying well, she should probably write a how-to book. Girlfriend sure did well!

Interesting point - makes sense. Husband hunting sounds exhausting.
