Donald Trump is a classic narcissist. Any women (or man) who unwittingly got caught in a narcissists web and found their way out again (which takes tremendous strength and support) can tell you that. Anyone who grew up with a narcissistic father or mother and managed to survive and become their own independent person with healthy boundaries can tell you that. If the press and others who claim to care about our country really want to understand Trump--read up on narcissists and how they work.
Some traits that are classic--they never really answer questions, ghost light you, deny things that you know happened because you saw it with your own eyes, deflect, say whatever they need to say to win you over or win the argument at the time, go through cycles of anger/tough talk/rage followed by nice guy and apologies, etc. Donald Trump is a master manipulator and knows how to read a room. He knows people react emotionally, will take the bait, and then focus on what he wants them focusing on instead of what they want to focus on. Settle a fraud lawsuit for Trump University that you swore you would never settle? Make sure you make a big deal about nothing so people start focusing on the Hamilton cast asking an elected official to remember them. Point out how "unfair" SNL is when they do what they have always done to every elected official and every prior president. Play the victim and people will be distracted from your victimizing.
The press should be studying up on Narcissistic Personality Disorder, reading books on how to deal with it, and talking to people who survived dealing with them. I educated myself to get away from one and learned in the process that the worst thing I did was to assume that the Narc in my life and that of my family behaved like the rest of us. He was like a different species. It is like expecting a dog to behave like a cat or a tiger to behave like your small domesticated house cat. They do not play by the same rules and expecting them to do so can get you hurt or killed.
I saw this coming as did some others. Everyone who saw this coming had experience with Trump's type of personality. Educate yourself to how he thinks or he is going to keep winning and people are going to keep saying things like "this is so strange." It is only strange if you think Trump thinks and behaves like you do (provided you are not a narcissist). If you know what he is his behavior does not seem strange at all. It seems text book.

The thing about democracy, beloveds, is that it is not neat, orderly, or quiet. It requires a certain relish for confusion.
