Lesson from this election: Seek first to understand before you can be understood.

Just tell them that a woman wanted to be president but she lied too much so she lost the election.

My first grader told me yesterday that if Trump won, we may have to move. I said, no, we are not going to move. He said many of his friends would move, and I told him emphatically none of his friends was going to move to another country in the middle of the school year. We definitely showed our preference around him, but we never said we were going to move. He heard that from school.

He was a bit sad when I told him the result this morning. But I told him that he was democratically elected, we have to wish him well. And we will get to vote again in 4 years. I hope he can forget about this whole thing for now. They are too young to worry about things like this.

Explain to them what a terrible candidate Hillary Clinton was, so awful that she even lost to a neanderthal like Trump.

I think you are making a big deal out of nothing. As much as I feel your pain, this is how the losing party feels every election. So, we elected an idiot but it was people's will.

Good grief. It's 1st grade. I promise you that one week from now the 7 and 6 year olds will have forgotten about the election.

I told my 6yr old DD this morning that he won. She asked whether if he is hateful it means that the people who voted for him are hateful and if they would hate her. I told her of course not, and that we are a strong country and for now the best that she can do is to continue to love and be kind to everyone.

It's why I've also deliberately shielded her from a lot of this over the last few months, including being very low key about who I was supporting. She's 6, not 12.

Don't be ridiculous. My family is Muslim and if you're here legally you don't need to worry. If you really cared about some of those who shared your religious beliefs maybe you can save some angst for the close relationship we have with the Saudis and the money we just air lifted into Iran.

Well her Pakistani father is in the process of getting US citizenship, and our family visits from Pakistan every year. We don't need to worry about those things?

That a lot of people bought into Trump's campaign rhetoric, whether they liked him as a person or not. That people are hurting and afraid on both sides of the aisle. That most people are sane and moderate and chose the best that they could, given the options. That we need to come together as a nation and heal from this hurtful campaign.

I agree, but to my teens... I have said and will continue to say that in DC we are insulated from racism and sexism.

But plain and simple once you get away from the city and educated people. People are racist and women are not treated as equal.

I wouldn't say that to a 1st grader, but I won't sugar coat it for my teen.

I genuinely believe this mindset is why we lost. Get your head out of your ass. You sound like an elitist asshole. It's time to re-examine some of your beliefs about "other" people and what might motivate them and who they are.

Not PP, but that does describe the people I personally know who voted for Trump and were vocal about it. (Rural area, not-educated, racist, old school re: women). I guess given the numbers there were closet people who voted for him too. Maybe they are nice/educated, but embarrassed by their actions.

You are part of the problem. Of course minorities and well educated people voted for Trump. Look at the results. But Democrats tried to impose Clinton and the Clinton machine onto the country mainly through hysterical labeling of anyone who would dare oppose her. Your party should have supported Sanders.

Agree on Sanders. Doubt that many minorities supported Trump though.
