I think of single moms by choice as being "solo parents".

I'm a "single mom" because I don't live with another adult, and am 100% responsible for my child when DC is at my house. My DCs other parent is involved, but in another state (hundreds of miles away), and my family is across country. I'm single. My ex pays support, but it's garnished, and isn't much.

Only if he is traveling to Mexico and divorces you before he gets back.

And never comes back

I bet you aren't when those statistic come out about how your child is doomed to fail because of your "single for a week" status.

No. You. Are. Not.

Are you suddenly the sole provider? Do you pay all the bills?

You're delusional.

+1. I'm a single mom with an acquaintance who has primary, but shared, custody and considers herself a single mom. I strongly disagree.

I have a friend who calls herself a single mom if her DH is out of town for more than a week. As someone who was an actual single mom for 10 years, I an not amused.

You know, it could have simply been a joke, AKA, "I'm a single mom this week."

I know this person quite well. It has been said often and is not a joke. DH is the primary parent though so she really struggles when he is gone. I've never heard him make the same "joke".

Widowed, adoptive parent, or separated/divorced with the other parent virtually completely out of the picture? That's a single parent.

"Single" doesn't imply the other parent is not involved. "Single" implies they are the ONLY parent when they have their time with the child/ren in question.

This is like the pain olympics.

Single mom is any mom raising kids on her own, but should a woman with a co-parent say "single mom" we all know what she means. I take zero issue with it, though I am admittedly jealous of the shared responsibility...takes some weight off!

signed,

single mom

To me, a single mom is one who is not married (or in a marriage-like co-habitating relationship).

Divorced, never married, etc, but the father of the kid(s) doesn't live with the mom.

Doesn't mean she's on 100% of the time, or has the kids 100% of the time.

As the kids say these days, dafuq?

That what I said as a married friend claimed to be single for a week, dafuq? Same with the divorced women keeping their kids for 4 days a week and inquire about when I will start dating, dafuq? When?

Bad analogy. I get what you are saying, but it is not equal. Co-parenting, whether divorced or not, is not single motherhood.
