Well what are some 2nd tier LACs with strong Classics departments?

There are next to no students at HSC who do not drink. The fact that there are only 1100 students and it's in FarmVille doesn't help. Greek is 50%.

I predict you will be happy at the following schools: none.

What you are looking for probably doesn't exist. Have you talked to kids at HSC? Talk to a lot of them and ask them about drinking. Honestly, there are kids at every school who don't drink. Does the school offer a substance free dorm?

Also talk to students about studying and how seriously they take it. You can always be as serious as you want.

Remember, admissions folks are selling the school. Actual students can tell you their opinions on what really goes on. Spend some time there.

I want to reiterate what a PP said. Studying the classics doesn't not mean it is automatically a conservative school. People study the classics at schools that are more liberal leaning. I knew several people who did the classics at my very liberal SLAC.

You won't find a school that checks all the boxes. Find one that checks the most important boxes for you.

TBH, I think you should have spent more time working on your grades in high school so you could get into a better school. That would have been far more helpful than spending time on a message board with a target audience of parents.

I'm sorry I sound harsh, but look at the schools honestly. You might even learn to accept someone with more liberal views than you. We don't bite, you know. College is an experience on all sorts of levels. Being only among "your kind" is a little limiting. I guarantee you will meet liberal people in the real world (after college) and it will be fine.

What about Purdue? It's president is a non-neocon former Republican governor.

Lincoln represented Illinois, and Illinois was an important union state. I don't understand why the board of UVA picked a Yankee female President after the Southern gentleman who was an alum left. They should've picked someone like him to replace him.

You realize that admissions people and college administrators are on this board and might be able to identify you when you apply for admission to their school? Do you actually think they are going to admit you with all that you say on here? Or have you said all these things to their faces so it doesn't matter anyhow?

PaleoCon here
I seriously doubt that any colleges that I'm applying to have admins on this forum. Even if they do, I don't see why they would care about my opinions when considering me for admission. . If SJWs and BLM are free to speak their minds, then so am I.

Take what I said to heart. It was kind advice.

Dear College Admin - I do not envy your job, though I am curious if reviewers can tell much about what type of person an applicant is when reviewing their files? Character does not seem to be a major factor in selecting the type of person a school wants to represent them. Grades, activités, and Numbers rule the day.

It depends on the size of the school and the mission. It also depends on the programs/departments and who actually reads the folders. In general, you get red flags in essays and recommendations. Maybe something will come up as odd on the activities/extra-curriculars. Particularly for graduate programs I tell people to lock down all their social media presence and update their linked in. I have seen people get rejected from a Google search. I have also seen people rejected because of things they have said to staff and how they have treated staff. Always, always, always be nice to any secretary/front desk person/coordinator you meet. When I was younger I once told a prospective who was making me uncomfortable and being inappropriate that I was "just a secretary" and the faculty member in the next room was cracking up since I had a vote on the committee and the respect of my colleagues. It was agreed the prospective was inappropriate and we didn't want to deal with someone inappropriate. Character matters. No one wants to deal with a high maintenance student who doesn't have a moral compass. But it is also about match. Will this student be happy here? Will they thrive? Or will they fall apart? Can they handle the pressure? You run the numbers for the top students, for the rest it sometimes comes down to who wants to go to bat for the person. That was my long answer. My short answer: character matters. Also, I love my job! Working and being on a college campus is the best!

UMW used to have direct transfer to UVA due to its history of being a sister college. I would not be surprised if the transfer still exists. No loss of grades or standing when transferring.

Patrick Henry College. Good academics and very conservative.

Paleo - I think that you are confusing conservative politics with the study of classics. Both are very different. Though I am sure that you know that.

Very intellectual and liberal leaning students seek out the classics as a basis of a very good liberal arts education (the old school style liberal arts).

I am sure that you know both these things. However, one of the great things about college is exposure to other people and schools of thought. Not to FORCE you to change your perspective on the world.. but to better understand what other people think and why; and then really think through why you look at the world in the way you do. It may or may not lead to any change, but it is worth the discomfort.

HSC may have a drinking problem, but you do not have to participate. Though I doubt you'd be able to get into a fraternity or have much of a social life.

Finally - have you looked into schools in the UK? They may have old school classics programs. Union University in TN?

What do I need to do if I want to do this? My major will be Classics.

Or you could like Hampden-Sydney and not want to leave! Make the most of wherever you end up.

That is very possible. At least from the outside, HSC has everything I'm looking for. Preppy, conservative, a strong core curriculum, and a good Classics department. However, I've heard there's a serious issue with drinking at HSC, and that scares the heck out of me. I'm a very religious guy, and may abstained from alcohol entirely. I don't have an issue with some students drinking on weekends. What I would have an issue with is a huge number of students running around drunk on campus and in dorms.( especially during the week) I liked it when I visited though. Certainly seemed like a place where I'd be happy.

Why not apply to Liberty University???

PaleoCon here
Liberty is a joke academically, and does not offer a Classics major. I hate American higher education. 100 years ago, I would've been just fine at Harvard or Yale. Now the Ivy League is dead. Wheaton and Calvin were once strong Christian colleges with good academics, but now they're shifting to the Left as well. It seems like you have to swallow modernism/Liberalism to be taken seriously in academe these days. I looked at Hillsdale, but they're dominated by NeoCons/Straussians, Limbaugh-lovers, and Bushites. Same with Grove City. I've said it many times, there's no really good fit for me. There are plenty of places for people on the Far-Left (Oberlin, Reed, Hampshire, Sarah Lawrence) but no colleges for Far-Right Classicists like me. New St. Andrews College might fit my criteria, but it probably wouldn't be taken seriously in today's Left-wing corporate/academic world. As i have said, HSC looked wonderful when I visited, but most people I speak with say there's a huge drinking problem there.
