Ew. A golden retriever puppy in the basement. Why did you get a puppy? Especially such a great breed.

My 10 year old dog would cry all night long if left in his crate in a room separate from us. Some dogs just need humans near them. Dog sleeps on the ground near our bed and doesn't make a peep.

Try putting the crate in your room.

Dear God, who lets a puppy cry?

Our puppies cried on the floor of our room unless people were also sleeping on the floor. The puppies did best [and we did best] in our beds. On the floor they might venture to pee in a corner of the room. In your bed they wake you up. 12 pound puppy in a queen or king with you and it won't pee! Just like children puppies transition to eventually sleeping in their own bed/crate all night even in another room. Our clingiest pup/now dog started in our beds and walks into his crate in a nother room at bed time. The dog gets tucked in with some treats, hugs, and the door gets shut. Doesn't have to be latched.

The negative comments on this topic are laugh out loud funny. Sure, let the little animal run the entire household, sleep in the bed, and do whatever she wants. Let her destroy the house and pee and poop all over. God forbid, don't let her cry! And anyone taking issue with putting the crate in the basement needs to get a grip. We're not talking about putting the dog in a cage in the freezing backyard, but letting her sleep in a warm comfortable area of the house that will allow the rest of the family to get some sleep. Adults have to work and kids have to go to school. The puppy becomes part of the family, not the focal point of the family.

Good behavior and good sleep habits are the best gift anyone could give their new dog. A little crying early on will pay huge dividends in a short time.

You and your husband take turns sleeping in the room with the crate and give potty breaks. Sleep on the couch.

Just curious, pp, what breed is your puppy that can wait that long? Is it a big dog breed?

We just got a rescue dog that is crate trained. We have the dog sleep in the crate next to our bed at night, no problems. We only use the crate for sleeping at night.

Try having the crate in your bedroom. If he cries, take turns sleeping in the floor near him, then move up to your bed.

How about a pen, just fence off a small area with some plastic to protect floor, plus a pee pad (if puppy will use) and of course comfy blanket. At least the puppy won't be locked in a crate! Leave crate door open if you are using one, inside fenced area.

Im glad the puppy is doing well, but please reconsider a midnight potty rub. An 11 week old puppy should not be holding it for 9 hours. This will likely end in a UTI or bladeer infection.
