LOL wow. NP here who has heard of "Hamilton" but not of LMM. The bottom line is, I don't have enough leisure time to spend it on popular culture--I am more interested in getting in some hikes and gardening. Bottom PP, I don't follow your logic that people who don't know who popular entertainers are 1) are proud of this fact, and 2) are ignorant and stupid. We just have different interests. You like People magazine and I like National Geographic. So what? In 40 years you will have garnered a certain set of facts (about LMM, about the latest Honey-Boo-Boo scandal...) and I will have more info about how the monarch butterflies navigate or the latest way to make water in the desert. To each their own, and probably each of us thinks the other is squandering their leisure time. But I guess the truth is, we are lucky that we live in a country that allows us enough freedom, and leisure time to indulge in our differing interests. If we all liked what you liked (or what I liked) it would be a pretty boring place.

A lot of us could recognize LMM from the PBS revival of The Electric Company a few years back, if not Hamilton.

God, are you a judgmental asshole in real life or just on the internet? Some people have other interests and worries that preclude worrying about the latest hit Broadway show; it doesn't make them ignorant or stupid. Anyone who would judge a person who doesn't know about musicals or who would judge a person who DOESN'T judge those people is really awful.

BTW, the Trump supporters I personally know DO know who LMM is and about "Hamilton." Likewise, the Clinton supporters I know (like my 90 year old, WWII veteran grandfather and his 82 year old wife) don't know anything about musicals.

I honestly don't know how anyone could avoid the Hamilton mania. It's everywhere (and for good reason, from the little I've seen).

Four years ago, before the 2012 election, I was out with friends and we started talking politics. One of them, who had been quiet, said "Who is Michelle Bachmann?" Now seriously -- this was well into the primaries. How hard do you have to avoid media of all kinds to not have even heard her name?

I haven't seen it in person, but I devoured the cast recording, read the annotated libretto, have watched as many clips as possible, etc. I hate the Broadway culture that drives up ticket prices (not LMM's fault--with his crusade, tickets are free to NYC students and available for $10 via the lottery), but I can consume as much as possible within my means.

I didn't see the Greek comedies and tragedies in 5BC either, but I can read the plays and recognize Aeschylus, Sophocles, etc as people who changed the face of theatre. Same for Hamilton and LMM.

does anybody watch snl anymore? I can't remember the last time I watched it. Just kind of faded away with all the new media and 500 tv stations.
