More seriously, there is a KoolAid thing going on that steps from the fact that people in teh feeder schools have a lot of faith in the school leaders. People are grateful to have a promising option and maybe, someday, DCI will life up to the "best in the city" moniker, whatever that means.

Personally I think they're trying to do too much with the resources a charter school in DC has and kids with vastly disparate academic and social backgrounds. The population now is pretty high need, in terms of economically disadvantaged and special needs. They are required to incorporate new second language learners at 6th and 9th and offer tracks for IB career and diploma certifications in high school. It's significantly more complex than what BASIS or Latin or even SWW is trying to do.

Yes there are some, not many. I know a family that lives in Shepherd Park that is sticking with DCI next year since they can walk to school and keep Spanish. They can leave at any time so there's not much risk. Doesn't mean DCI is more desirable. I wish them well. Great news about building.

I would say right now DCI would be similar to TR, ITS, Haynes, Cap City for middle and Haynes, McKinley, and Cap City for high school.

I'm sure. Doesn't mean DCI is a better school, just means that the family has different values. I am IB for Deal but sticking with our charter through 8th for personal preferences as well. Doesn't mean I think that overall my current Charter is better than Deal.

I'm also IB for Deal, and also considering staying at our charter until 8th -- mostly because Deal is so big and I'm not sure it's a good fit. I also like the idea of avoiding a transition during the middle schools years which are already so difficult. But, then I'm still planning to go to Wilson for HS -- is that your plan, too? I'm just worried that staying at my current Charter may make the transition to Wilson even harder since our child won't know as many people and our charter's academics aren't as competitive, which I like.

Yes. Our plan is either Wilson, SWW or Banneker. I have some of the same concerns as you but it's no different than sending my DD to Deal from a small charter. I figure she'll be better equipped for the transition in 9th vs 6th.

Well, it is pretty annoying that this PP decided to immediately talk in terms of superlatives. As if other public schools that are doing a fantastic job already, somehow get bumped to the bottom. How about just be a cheerleader for DCI and wish them the best?
