for older kids: "Because of Winn-Dixie." I get choked up when I read this book to my kids - it is so sad but beautifully written.

If you love The Snowy Day, try some of Ezra Jack Keats' other books. A Whistle for Willie and Pet Show are two of our favorites of EJK's.

My kids are transitioning out of being read to but my 7 yo let me read her Big Read Barn the other evening. It was so relaxing.

I wonder if we grew up around the same time! These were some of my favorite books as a child and I can still read them to this day without getting tired of the stories or illustrations (especially Ferdinand, and The Snowy Day).

I love Sandra Boynton. My dyslexic 3rd grader just started reading them for the baby, so I love them even more for that. Barnyard Dance may be my favorite but it's hard to pick just one.

It's a great book - and so different (greys, blacks, not much color) from most children's books.

I'm different from a PP, in that I love quality children's literature, and especially the picture book genre. So I just love lots of books for various reasons. I'm going to have to go find this Pout Pout Fish that everyone seems to like. Of course, what one person loves, another does not.

But anyway, get that out of hte library for your preschooler (31/2 and older, I'd say) and see if they like it!

I love the way the words flow and how the illustrations mesh or extend the words.... so I love both

I love Little Red Hen makes a pizza by Philemon Sturges as I love the way it turns the traditional story on it's head

I love Jane Yolen's Owl Moon - I could read that twice a night forever. "when you go owling, you have to be quiet." and the beauty of the illustrations, how cold it looks, how much of a special treat this is for the child and her father, the wonder and beauty of nature, ohhhhhh.

For younger children, I love Off we Go! also by Jane Yolen. She also writes chapter books and those are fabulous but that's another topic.
