Another 'nother lawyer:

No opportunity cost. No damages. He planned to give up the hour of potential billing in order to dazzle you with his manifold charms at lunch. Unless he can show he would have made $ somehow if you'd shown up im afraid he's SOL.

Put calendar reminders in your phone. Include the person's number so you can immediately text when the reminder comes up.

He's a crazy douche though.

Not hard to understand...

1) Justifiably, his feelings were hurt when you didn't show up.
2) He responded by telling you how much he bills, probably item #1 on his self-esteem checklist.
3) He made a stupid comment based on 1 and 2.
4) I think you owe an apology and an explanation, not cash.

Tell him $550 may be his hourly rate but for liquidated damages he gets $5. And you've donated it to charity.

He was pretty mad and said he waited over an hour ( he ate lunch). He's a lawyer and said since I stood him up, I owe him $550 ( client hourly rate) for his time. He wants me to meet him with cash. I think this is ridiculous.

OP is he serious or was this his poor and awkward attempt at a joke?

+1. Was he joking??

I think it's terribly rude that you did not let him know you couldn't make it. Adults don't behave this way. I think the fact that he asked you to pay his billable rate is hilarious. I highly doubt he was serious and I don't blame him at all for being upset.

This kind of question isn't worth validating with a response.

This is insane!!

While I can understand him being disappointed at being stood up, life happens.

And why should you pay him an hourly wage for his time....??!
It's not like you were meeting him for legal services or that he canceled on an important client just to meet you.
Even if he did, that would be his bad.

His male ego is just in shambles now & he likely was speaking out of anger.
He'll recover his pride soon.

I wouldn't put him on social media blast however.
He isn't worthy of it.

Just laugh at his dumbass + move on.

OP here. It was a serious medical emergency. I won't bring up specifics. The date was the last thing on my mind.

I wonder if he's dangerous. You've never met him. He is super angry and wants to meet up.

In less someone was dead or dying, it was really crappy of you to stand him up. You are completely in the wrong.
