I think it was far worse before anti-bullying campaigns became popular. If anything, I think girls are nicer today.

actually msnbc did just the article a few weeks back. Obama certainly hasn't helped, like most things in the last 7+ years.


Have you and other parents lobbied him for help? Because I feel pretty sure that any executive order he had issued regarding your kids, you would have fought tooth and nail.

I still hear these words or their equivalents in the halls of my middle school along with slurs against immigrants, religious minorities, and poor students. This is an affluent public school in MoCo. Well now middle schoolers are just barbarians, we all know that. Give them a few years, they'll mature into humans. Most of them.


Many middle school boys are out of control to each other. I wish parents and schools would teach and insist on better behavior.

This is half the problem.

The other half is social media.

There is no escape for the bullied kids. There is no face to face reaction to the bullying, so it is far easier for girls to hurt one another.

I am so happy that I ended up with all boys

I would not want to raise a girl these days.

But they shouldn't be working through it alone -- the adults in their lives, including teachers, should be teaching them how to interact kindly with others.

I wonder if the increased academic expectations at younger ages, including more pressure for everyone to be reading by the end of kindergarten, eliminates time to teach social emotional skills, which allows mean girl behavior to go unchecked.

I don't think it has necessarily increased. I do think, though, that kids aren't raised to deal with it as good as they used to be. When I was in school my parents always taught me to fight back (proverbially) and stick up for myself. Nowadays, it's cry about it, every single slight is "bullying," kids need safe spaces, blah blah blah. When I was in school (which really wasn't terribly long ago) you had it out with the mean girl. Then you moved on. Our kids aren't taught to stick up for themselves as well.
