The bottom line is that Rio officials have more to gain by not admitting this crime than the swimmers have to gain by making up a false story.

The selection of Rio as an Olympic site was a bit controversial. And, they are trying really hard to give the appearance that all is well in the city and with the Olympics specifically.
But, everything is not all rainbows and roses. Several Olympians have been victims of crime and a coach has even been killed in a taxi cab accident.
And, then there is the controversy of body parts washing up on the beaches, the gross condition of the waters, the green diving pool (for which the explanation is still questionable), very expensive cameras being stolen, and the camera falling and injuring several a couple days ago.
Yes, bad things happen at the Olympics. But, it seems to me the Rio folks are trying to cover a lot of it up........

The point is...he told his mother (for whatever reason), never intending for the story to get out. Once it was out he first tried denying, then had to backtrack.
