Cool...just being herself...kind to others, open to new experiences...expands her friend circle at school, during extra-curriculars, summer camp...she accepts people for who they are, laughs easily, self-deprecating, loves to dance, etc. I was the nerd...her high school experience is sooo much better than mine which was spent with my head in a book.

Cool in HS parent with loser kid here. He looks back at my pictures of the football team and cheerleader girlfriends, and I think he sort of wants that for himself. I love my kid and desperately want to him to know it's ok not to be cool but it's important to like yourself.
The so-called cool kids in my HS were drinking and partying. At some point I realized how pointless it was and started studying hard and pulled away from that crowd. My old cool friends now work at car dealerships or are realtors.
I could have written this (except I am female and was a field hockey player). Most of my cool/sporty friends were also very smart, though - but we all were too much into partying, popularity and all that comes with it ... My kid is in elem school but I hope as she ages she feels confident in herself for herself.

I think my son is mostly nerdy but he's found his own tribe at school so it's all good! He says he likes to be known but not well-known.

I was a total nerd in HS and somehow despite DS doing the same extracurriculars I did, he's cool.
He's a great singer and actor and is very involved in the theatare department and is in orchestra. But he was still his junior prom king and constantly has girls calling him.

President Science Honor Society, Varsity Athlete, Homecoming Court. The hard work is all her, but much of the success is just navigating this particular arena. There will be other arenas and others will have the skills to navigate those well.

All three are both. They are well liked, care about school and getting good grades, smart, are athletic and good at their sport.
I guess you could say they're more cool than nerds, but I just hate the sound of that based on what the "cool kids" were like when I was growing up because they're nothing like those kids were. They are kind and friends with all kinds of other kids.

My DS is a jock/nerd. In full time sports, high achieving in sports and great grades, honors and AP classes all As. I am not sure what nerd means any more. My DD is a cool kid, popular, social, her grades are ok but not as good. But if you use movie definition or "nerd" or "cool" very few kids fall into that archaic stereotype today.
