If you're close and you'd for sure drop your plans to help them too. See if they want to paint a room also? While you're all in that mode?

If you do, definitely order dinner, and do something extra nice for then on top of that.

If it is particularly hot + humid where you are living, I would try to postpone until the weather cools.
Trust me, no one wants to perform any physical/laborious task in this oppressive heat wave.

There are times when you have close friends where you can make "no questions asked" requests. This one is a no brainer especially since they know your situation. Ask them to help paint, but not as a party. The pizza, wine, and music will be the bonus for bonding.

I would want to help a friend in a situation like yours.

Good thing some of these PP are not your friends because there are some very selfish people here!

Yes, I had a friend in a similar situation. My heart broke for her. When she needed help moving, I totally wanted to lend a hand because I felt so powerless that I couldn't do anything to stop the pain she went through. I can't believe all the people saying it's tacky. They must be lucky to have never gone through hard times.

Just make it clear up front that your love some company and that if friends are willing to lend a hand that would be amazing. True friends will understand. I would, anyway, even though I hate painting.

If I were childless (and maybe even if I'm not) I'd help OP. I'd be happy w/ pizza and drinks as payment.

If I had any inkling of what you had just left I would be so happy to actually be able to help you with something tangible that I'd be thrilled to ask.

the people you are asking are YOUR FRIENDS! No one will think it is tacky because they are friends.

I helped a friend paint the entire first floor and an upstairs spare bedroom of the house she had just bought. I think she was nearly 40!! I was happy to do it and we had fun. Please ask your friends, good ones would be sad to know you needed them and didn't let them know.

If you were my close friend I would want you to ask.
