Wrightsville Beach is a great family-friendly beach and Wilmington is a lovely historic old port city on the river, with cobbled streets and gorgeous old houses. Also has many good restaurants.
Some of the old houses have tours that are really fascinating and explain the area's rich (and troubled) history.
Just outside the city are several plantations that give tours. And before people jump all over me, the one I went to addressed the treatment and lives of slaves with great care and sensitivity. It had an old slave cemetery on the property, and it was very interesting.
+1
Wilmington is a lovely town. There's a film studio/sound stage there you can take a tour of, they have filmed a lot of movies there.
( you can also check out all the spots in town where they filmed Dawson's Creek)
Wrightsville beach is very cute, you can also check out Kure beach and Carolina beach.
