Personally I would stick with the large dining room. Keep in mind that you can use the dining room for storage in ways you might not think of. For example I routinely keep bowls of fruit on my dining room buffet. I have an enormous china cabinet that I keep all sorts of things stored in, very useful. If you get creative you can make a large dining room more useful than you'd think. Plus your kids might wind up liking to use it as a spot to do games, homework, etc. if the seats are comfortable enough.

The White House isn't a "house", you know that right? There are 450 people who work there in some capacity and a full 96 that are groundskeepers, electricians, etc. There are 5 chefs. 6,000 people a day visit the White House. Beyond that, it's obviously a symbol of American government. The comparison is pretty stupid.

But yes, if someone built a replica of the White House as their personal residence in McLean somewhere you wouldn't find it pretty obscene?

I'm worried - really worried - about whether you're including enough bathrooms for a dining room of that size. You know what happens - put food in one end and it starts coming out the other! Of course if you don't have that many big dinners you could always go with porta potties, prn.

This. Room needs to be proportional to the rooms in the rest of the house. Also make sure one long end of the room is a wide cased opening. That way if you do need to fit more people in the room for holidays there is room to expand.

OP, that seems reasonable to me for that size house. My friend's dinning room is slightly larger and her house is about 10K. She hosts great holiday dinners there and her table can fit 12.

Yes, I have a lot of crap. I have a lot of kids of different ages and that generates a lot of crap. Plus lots and lots of books, random crap that was my grandmothers or her grandmothers that I can't really bear to throw out, and stuff like Christmas decorations, luggage, etc. I never buy myself anything but freely admit I have a lot of crap. But I think most people underestimate the amount of closet space they need for stuff like holiday decorations, linens, luggage, board games, hand-me down clothes that the younger kids have not yet grown into (that's a whole closet on my house). kids' craft supplies and toys you don't want visible all the time, etc. etc.

Perhaps a person who was having a rough day, having money problems, or just a jealous person all around...but today in this forum there has been some very snarky comments. I've never seen this in this particular forum and it's quite disheartening. If you can't relate or disagree simply click out. No need to throw the Op's under a bus.
