Which isn't a real holiday? MLK day or (Federal) New Year's Day.

20th and 27th of January, first is Inauguration Day, which I don't consider a holiday, and second is a day off for professional day.

I thought Inauguration Day was for the convenience of families due to traffic issues.

No. It was added after the Nov. 2008 election. Barclay introduced the change in December 2008. Part of the language also said that Inauguration day would always be observed as a school holiday. He never requested the holiday due to traffic.

So, I get what the other posters are saying, but just one poster's opinion: I wouldn't lie and say she was sick. It's just not a good message to send AND it will likely get back to the teachers that she wasn't sick anyway.

I would simply let the school know you have an unavoidable trip and you are not comfortable leaving your child home alone. It's just two days and, especially at the beginning of the year, your child won't miss much. Make sure to check in with the teachers to get any make up work.

We routinely pull our daughter out for 1-2 days per year for non-illness-related reasons. I suspect that our pattern is common but people don't talk about it. My only word of caution is not to do this every time you go on a business trip; it may become too many days absent.
