Your new SIL does not own the name. Use it. It's ridiculous that she even said this to you. FWIW, when I was younger I had a list of names I loved and wanted to use. I did not use any of them for my kids, not one. My sister and I loved the same girls name. I had DS first so didn't use it. Then she had her DD. You know what...after hearing her and BIL say the name so much I really grew to dislike it (don't dislike my niece, but I no longer want to use the name).

She's a big bag of crazy. As PPs have said, she won't be your stepsister for long given your respective parents' track records. And she who has the baby first gets the name.

My sister used the boy name I absolutely loved and really wanted for her first. She had no idea that I even wanted to use the name because only a jack@ss tries to call dibs on a name when they aren't even having a kid yet.

I agree with everyone! Use the name you love and forget about stepsister. I always thought it sounded crazy to tell people what they can and cannot name their baby! Btw, my sister and I both loved the name Charlotte. I had my Charlotte 15 years ago and she decided to stop at one and had a boy. She had a different nickname but even if she didn't I wouldn't bat an eye if there were two Charlottes in the family. Big deal!

Your stepsister is crazy. Use the name. She isn't married, she isn't pregnant, she isn't even engaged. She has to get over it.

My SIL asked me for my favorite baby boy name (when neither of us were pregnant) and promptly used it for my nephew when he was born. This was after promising me that she will not use that name! Anyways, I got over it and find that my favorite boy name is that of my son.

If you have the baby first, go with what you want to name her/him. Your stepsis is welcome to use the very same name for her child. There is no law against that, you know.

Why does she get to control this part of your life when she isn't even close to being ready to name a baby?

Unless Congress has enacted legislation regarding what we are allowed to name children, you can name then anything yoh wish. Now, if you had a racehorse, you have guidelines.

When we announced my second pregnancy, my sister in law responded over our goofy conference call with her parents with a demand that we not use any variations of Alexander/Alexandra/Alexis. This was ridiculous. Alexander was our top boy's name, but luckily it was a girl and we didn't have to deal with the fallout. I would have used Alexander if the baby had been a boy.

By the way, fast forward two years-- she has announced she probably prefers to remain child-free with her husband. You never know, but certain types of people get really weirdly possessive about names. I think you need to make sure that there aren't any better name options. There may be! If you can't think of anything better, you need to have a heart to heart with her. Let her know that you have absolutely always loved this name and that it won't bother you if she uses it too. Tell her maybe there will be some nicknames or something to distinguish the kids. Or maybe she will pick a different name…

She is doing you a favor if the name is in this top 10 list, seriously. pick something else.
