I'm a HS teacher and we had a unit after the SOLs that ended in a project or a test depending on the course. My children are in elementary school and aside from the field day and class party scheduled have been having class. They are in FCPS. I am not.
My kid's ES in FCPS has shown I think 6 movies before we even got to SOL time this year. These included Akeelah and the Bee, Inside Out (or two other choices that day), Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, and several others that were more Disney-style. 6th grade.
In past years I had a 2nd grader shown two full length Disney movies in ONE DAY. My 4th grader was shown the SAME movie in her regular homeroom and her adv. math class (two consecutive days). She was shown many more movies as well that year. That was also the year she spent 2+ hrs. playing computer games on school provided computers waiting for some classmates to finish their ecart tests (this happened more than once) -- my child finished in 30-40 min, but had to sit and do nothing but computer games for 2+ hrs.
My other child's school adheres much more to the FCPS rules that there cannot be movies unless they have an educational purpose. They never have movies unless it is about Ancient Greece or Colonial kids or something like that. First child's school cuts corners. Second child's school does not.
Where is this? That's too much.
More movies! Yesterday and today they watched "Home" and then they had another movie about space aliens who help a family with some problems on Earth (not sure of the name -- but it's an older movie). (I'm the PP being quoted above).

Anonymous wrote:To those complaining about the movies: Has it occurred to you that there may be a reason other than doing nothing? The teacher may have requirements to test kids individually and that is a way to keep the class quiet and busy. She may have stacks of paperwork demanded by Gatehouse that needs to be completed by the end of the day. She may have all sorts of requirements about which you know nothing. She may also think that the kids have worked hard and need a reward. And, maybe, just maybe, she thinks the kids deserve just a little bit of fun.

school is only 180ish days now. Needs to be around 210-220.

Another reason starting before Labor Day makes sense. Fewer scheduled days after testing.
