Any reasonable person would not expect her to wake a baby and drive an hour or more round trip at 10 pm to return an easily replaced item. That's much more atonement than necessary in this situation.

It might not be as easily replaced as you think. If the kids are the same age and one is size 6 and the other is size 10, then the 10 is husky and probably needs a certain kind of fit. That sort of thing might be the reason the mom is freaking out.

Regardless, you should have simply returned it. We all know the baby would have fallen back asleep in the car. And what are you teaching your careless son?

Yikes, my son has done this before, but no one was ever in a rush to get the item back. I always wash it and return it the next time I see the parents. I would have gone to target to get a new suit or given your situation driven to your house to pick it up. This is not normal OP.

NP here and I would be embarrassed to harass a mom alone with 2 kids (including a baby) while her DH is overseas and demand that she drive 2 hours to return a bathing suit at 10 at night when I could easily pick up a new one the next day. That is the very definition of a self-centered jerk.

And you'd probably spend more on gas than the suit is worth. Target is open at 10 p.m. She can go get a new suit and send you the bill.

You're crazy. I could drive 30 minutes in any direction and find a place to buy a new bathing suit. If the thing was that precious, the mom should have instructed her kid to keep an eye on it and make sure he brings it home.

I clicked on this thinking you were going to say that your kid stole something from the house where the party was or took something of sentimental value to another child -- his lovey or autographed football or something.

But 2 private school moms who can afford to pay 30-40k for school having this much angst over a $10-20 bathing suit!? I would NOT be driving 50 min to return that. If school is still in session, your kid can bring it to this kid on Monday; if not you can drop it off/mail it to them next week. If you REALLY feel bad, pay pal her $20. Otherwise make sure you do return it at some point soon -- bc this is the nasty mom who will tell the entire 3rd grade that your son is a thief and you're lazy -- but no need to drive 2 hrs round trip tonight. Seriously -- on the way to the Jersey Shore there are a million Old Navy stores in various strip malls, she can pick up 2-3 bathing suits for about $10 each there.

Do you seriously spend time worrying about what other moms at your kids' school will think? I try to do what I think it right in a given circumstance, but what other random moms might say really does not affect me in the least.
