I still don't get it. The people in power are the same people who were in power before. If Obama failed, it was that he did not prop up the Muslim Brotherhood to defend against the army.

Oh god, give it a break. I'm sick of people claiming that the President of the US is responsible for everything that happens in the world. The President is power, America is powerful. True. That doesn't make either omnipotent or omnipresent.

OP here: my aunt who watches Egyptian news said that the bishop for that region and the Coptic Orthodox patriarch have refused to participate in a "reconciliation" which is what usually happens in these sorts of incidents in lieu of actual law enforcement. The bishop stated that the community can "reconcile" after people are arrested and prosecuted.

The chieftan for the village/town allegedly then called the bishop and threatened him for this.

Which one would be least bad for US interests? Difficulty level: factoring into account that backing the overthrow of a fairly and democratically elected government has a non-zero chance of being a point of resentment in future decades (so a hostile but not terrible government like say Mossadegh or Morsi might be tolerated because installing a client to replace them might not work over a 10-15 year timeframe.)

But if you think Morsi was going to create Iran v2.0 or actually invade Israel instead of whining about Israel in international fora, then supporting the coup could at least be arguable.


I think Iran 2.0 was precisely what Egyptian liberals were scared of, and why so many Egyptians supported the coup. The Brotherhood made a lot of changes in Egypt very quickly and people were scared. They weren't going to do anything with regards to Israel, but who knows if a full-blown theocracy had taken root what would have happened.
