And what about the religious minorities that live in Muslim countries and that may want to leave? Trump took advantage of the demographic pickle the GOP has gotten itself into. The consultants are telling the party it needs to broaden its base and be more inclusive, the base isn't broad enough to win any more. Inclusiveness doesn't fly with the base, however. So everyone was running away from the base with an eye on the general election. Trump made a decision to win the base without regard for the consequences.
Think this is part of it. He was shrewd in that he had a sense of what the base wanted. But he was lucky in that he actually is in alignment with these voters in one respect - the bombastic, America-first jingoism. So though he flips and flops like literally no other candidate in history on most of the other issues, I think he actually believes the anti-immigrant/Muslim/Make America Great Again crap, and that is the shred of "authenticity" that people are responding to.

I think he has to be given credit for strategizing with the gifted resources of timing and discontent.
There's a segment of the population that's been seething since Obama was elected and it's only gotten worse. Unfortunately, Republicans misused that sentiment and it got away from them. Trump exploited that rift between the party and their base.
Then there's the horrible field of candidates. The weaknesses were so many and so obvious, that it was easy for someone with a genuine dislike for them to exploit them as well.

There's a really broad space between "political correctness" and being verbally abusive, and unfortunately, Donald Trump is not in that space.
