I don't go to NC for camping, but I do head north for 6-8 hrs for some long weekend camping trips in PA and NY - we leave Thursday at lunchtime and come back Sunday afternoon.

We leave at 4am and it takes 4.5-5.5 hours to get to Duck (the lower part). With the 64 construction though all bets are off this summer.
