That could describe my kid. School wrote down that test scores did not reflect child's potential. I'm a little sad. Child is always doing extra work in class assigned only to him. All 4's on every academic subject for 2 years through third quarter. Submitted math and social studies writing. Great writer. Apparently had passed 2nd grade writing criteria at beginning of year. We had higher scores and did not get in. I'm surprised with the extensive commentary on the GBRS and persuasive comment from school.

Additional info on request:

DC consistently gets all 4s with some 3s. Parent-referred, denied and in on appeal. Submitted several samples in original. In appeal, included 3rd quarter report card, additional rec from piano teacher, illustrated story that DC wrote in school, and math assessment that showed problem solving skills. One of the verbal sub-scores was extremely high despite having a 120 overall on WISC (it was brought down on processing speed). DC is an avid reader and diligently does schoolwork / homework and never has issues.

Truly feel DC is on cusp and could go either way. Scores reflect that. I do know they aren't really challenged in their classrooms and are capable of more, but they are happy with their friends. We are concerned with AAP as it would take them way from their friends (we are a center school).

Cogat 128 WISC V 126 VCI 130 - DS is in on appeal. Got the letter yesterday.

Can you folks post more than just scores?
Since the committee uses a holistic approach, it would be helpful to know what else you included in your appeal.
And maybe a description of your child would be good too. Thank you!

Here's the thing (responding to the poster saying these are mediocre scores for a gifted program) I was surprised my DC was admitted with those scores, but I have an older child who went through AAP and is in middle school now and I'm familiar with the curriculum and I also have no doubt DC will do well in the program. In fact, I suspect DC will overall perform better than my older child who had much higher test scores but whose strengths and weaknesses are more uneven. The fact is that, in my opinion, the program isn't that challenging.

Many of my child's classmates have been admitted and these kids seem very similar to my DC.

What is the county doing with this program? I honestly have no idea. I think it isn't really a "gifted" program anymore and it's more like tracking for the high performing or testing group of kids. But don't blame those of us who are following the rules (no test prep in our house for example) and working within the system that the county has created to do what we think is best for our kids.

Looking at the scores, I guess no appeals were denied...?

No offense to those admitted, but some of the credentials are mediocre at best for a "gifted" program.
