In many cultures this is normal. Parents are often very much involved in their adult children's lives. Not everyone in the world lives like affluent white Americans.

Agreed!! My ring was $12k and it was probably one of the greatest days for my in-laws when my husband wanted to pick out my ring with them. I would have accepted a $2 ring and they knew that. In my DH's culture, the parents of the groom buy the ring.

I spent 10K. It's less than I make in a month and didn't even cut into savings. Granted the 10K also involved taking apart her grandmother's ring and repurposing the other stones. You really shouldn't bash people for their choices. The only one who ends up looking bad is you

Sold my car. Wife LOVES this story. The gesture was worth at least 2x the actual expenditure (which was $6k).

Oh we could but it certainly was a nice gift and far more useful than them purchasing my engagement ring.

I refused an engagement ring. I insisted on two stainless steel bands for $15 each. I don't understand the point in buying expensive jewelry.
