PP here. Whelp, guess you win. We were a 1-car family until we had our second, when we decided it wasn't safe not to have a backup car. If you can get by on a $1500 beater or only 1 car (if you have kids), kudos to you.

NP, we owned a 5 year old Camry which I paid $2k for, for 10 years, followed by a Rav 4 ($20k new)

Depends - how much was the total of your financed VW? In general, I think cash trumps financing in terms of frugality.

Married 8 years. HHI $200k. Paid $11k cash for Hyundai sedan when DD2 was born. Works for us.

Geez on the second car I could have been more clear. Car totalled. Payout was higher than expected (yes!!) and the used suv with sunroof was a good deal. It's a 2009 and does great for our two kids. Like I said we financed that purchase to use the insurance payout on higher debt. But we're almost done with the car payments now anyway. Ok maybe that's a little better. I'm tired.

New poster here. DH and I are mid-40's and have been married for 15 years. We have two cars -- 2007 Toyota Sienna, and 2003 Toyota Highlander. HHI is $400K. We went 1 child to private school and like to travel, and so we have to be frugal when it comes to cars.

Married 6 years. DH brought a 2006 Lexus to the marriage, paid off. In 2011 we bought a 2007 Toyota Highlander for $23k, paid cash, when we were about to have twins. HHI $270k. We will keep these cars for a long time.

Married 5 years.
2 cars- Mazda and a VW. Bought and paid for in cash pre-marriage. Plan on keeping them at least another 4-5 years.

HHI is over $500k. 2 kids. We put a lot of mileage on our cars, perhaps 30k a year between two drivers. I love cars, enjoy driving.
