Living in MtR for about 6 years. MtR Elem isn't bad, not great, but it won't hurt your kids. Stone isn't great... overcrowded. PG County has a lot of money coming in lately (re: AAA on GO bonds), pouring this into schools... lottery schools aren't bad, if you can get in.... otherwise you can use a 529 plans for K-12 private schools thanks to Gov. Hogan.

I answered upthread- do NOT make your plans based on whether a school, or an area, is up-and-coming. It may be, but things may not move fast enough to benefit your children. When you move somewhere you need to be accepting of what it is NOW, not some imaginary progress you have not seen yet. And DO NOT make any assumptions about specialty schools or programs. Those are quite literally winning a lottery. Make your plans with private school in mind in PG. Don't hope or bet on an up and coming area or specialty schools. I made this mistake. Don't make it too.


You are so on point. I made that mistake, because my community was promised an elementary school that never materialized. The assigned schools changed, and I hated my kids’ elementary school. Luckily I was able to use the babysitting transfer to get them out. However, the middle and high schools were not much better and I could not swing private. If I had to do it again, I would have moved to a community in PG that already had well-ranked schools, at least for elementary and middle. Even the charter schools are not best solution.

I agree. It depends on the kid. My DC got into French Immersion. I was thrilled. It was not a good fit for my child. After years of toughing it out, I finally gave up and sent kid to private. Best decision ever.
My older child did private prek and k, public 1, private 2-5, public for middle school and is heading to public HS (ERHS).
Each kid had different needs and some schools work, others don't. It's very individual.
