For the comment above on getting into AET. I'm an AOS student (the one from previous comments) and I have taken the CCTST, as well as have answered very similar interest statements/essays.
1. The CCTST (and the other one, I forgot) measure motivation and critical thinking. They'll have a lot of logic problems including math and reasoning. Do a lot of these logic problems from online to train your brain and you will be SET. They'll also ask you questions like "When you don't know the definition to the word you ____. A) look it up B) keep reading C) blah D) blah" to measure motivation.
2. I'm a little bit of an oddball since I had written and rewritten and edited my interest statements for 3 years. I wrote up to the word limit and really, really showed my deep passion for learning, exploration, and STEM. You used the phrase "how long do you get" which implies that the interest statements are timed. They could be...its been three years since I applied. If they time it, then I would practice timing yourself and answering questions regarding your passion for STEM and want to go to AET.
3. The AOS essays really capitalized on both ethics and critical thinking. My essays were: "Is it better to be a cynical scientist or a pessimistic scientist and why?" and "Should technology companies use people's information to sell products/deliver ads?". I wouldn't be surprised if AET uses similar ethics/science essays. The second essay prompt came with a reading. Each essay was timed for 30 minutes. After I got in to AOS, I overheard my teacher say that the director really wanted to see which students had included a call to action and if it was a good one. Practice coming up with creative call to actions as you practice for your essays. Also, get really familiar with one famous philosopher like Kant or Nietzsche. That way, if you encounter an ethics question you have no idea about, you can BS your way through by talking about what XYZ philosopher would have did in that ethical dilemma.
