The blog post pasted by the OP was from a FCPD senior who said his guidance counselor told him to take 6 APs his senior year.

I think 6 in high school is low to average now. [/quote]

It is only average among the group of kids that take six.

My kid will take four next year. That seemed plenty.

Me too so did most of my friends. I finished ore calc in 10th grade so there was no more non AP math anyway. AP history classes we so much more interesting than honors. AP lit and AP English had the best teachers in the school teaching them and there were very interesting discussions in those classes.

My 9th grader is taking 2 AP classes this year and will take 3 as a sophomore and 3 as a junior. His goal is to only do 1 senior year to focus on college applications.

AP tests and SAT2 counteract grade inflation bc they are standardized and not graded by local teachers.

6 AP classes in the same year would be twelve hours of homework a night.

The article does not say the student is in FCPS.

The student says his guidance counselor signed him up for 6 AP courses in his senior year. That would be quite unusual in any public school in NoVa except TJ. It would not be unusual for students to take more than six AP courses before graduating from high school, starting in their sophomore year.

I think it's time for parents to be brave and risk being "left behind." It is not admirable to simply go along with what everyone else is doing when you have evidence it's hurting your kid.
